OpenAI Opens ChatGPT's Text and Ads to Outside Checkers It Picks Itself

On October 5, OpenAI said it will watermark ChatGPT text in the EU and brought in DoubleVerify and IAS to test its ad safeguards. Only researchers and organizations it approves can use its detector.

OpenAI published two posts on Monday, October 5, and they read like they came from different departments. The first said ChatGPT and Codex text generated in the EU will carry an invisible watermark called textGrain. It’s rolling out over the coming weeks on every plan, with an opt-in for API customers anywhere in the world. The second announced a visual ad format that shows labeled ads next to images people generate in ChatGPT. It starts with a small group of US advertisers later in October and comes with a named set of outside firms to measure and police those ads.

One is a compliance step for the EU AI Act and the other is an ad product, yet in both OpenAI takes on a publisher’s duties.

OpenAI took on two publisher duties on the same day

A tool doesn't owe anyone a label or an audit. A publisher labels what it produces, and it lets the people who buy its inventory send in their own checkers. On Monday, OpenAI accepted both duties for ChatGPT. The watermark labels what the assistant writes. The ad announcement brings in Haus, Measured and WorkMagic for geo-based lift experiments. It also brings in DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science for brand-suitability pilots, per TechCrunch.

In both cases OpenAI decides who gets to check. Researchers and expert organizations have to apply for access to the text detector, which OpenAI grants case by case. There's no public tool at launch. The DV and IAS pilots run, in Unite.AI's account of OpenAI's post, "inside a controlled testing environment, without access to private user conversations." OpenAI describes the incrementality work with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic as early-stage.

ChatGPT is now a channel that gets checked, on terms OpenAI writes. That beats a channel nobody outside OpenAI could check at all. It still falls short of proof a revenue team can rely on. GTM teams that plan as if it were proof will end up citing verification nobody has run.

The scope of the watermark shows how reluctant the move is. Anthropic marks Claude's text worldwide, on every surface including its API and cloud partners, and explained the method on August 14. OpenAI applies its mark only where the law requires it and leaves the API switch off by default. That fits the company's history. It built a text watermark in 2024 and shelved it after an internal survey found almost 30% of ChatGPT users said they'd use the product less, as Search Engine Journal recounts. The EU deadline is what changed.

The watermark won't catch a rep, and it wasn't built to

Sales and marketing teams with European pipeline will hear that ChatGPT-drafted emails and proposals are now "detectable." OpenAI's own numbers say otherwise. At a 1% false-positive target, its detector found the mark in about 95% of 400-token passages of its test content and about 80% of 200-token ones. It found the mark much less often in constrained writing like math. Swapping 10% of the words for synonyms cut detection from about 92% to 66%, and swapping 25% cut it to 17%, per PPC Land's read of the post. Two hundred tokens is roughly 150 words, longer than plenty of cold emails. The EU's code of practice doesn't require marking free-form text below that length at all. Any rep who edits a draft is already doing the synonym swap.

The buyer can't run the check anyway. No prospect has the detector, and OpenAI says a missing mark "does not prove human authorship." For a small group of approved checkers, the watermark answers one question: whether an OpenAI model likely produced the text. It says nothing about how much of the pitch a person shaped.

The watermark still matters to GTM in two ways. As Search Engine Journal noted, a team sharing one ChatGPT plan will soon produce marked copy in its European offices and unmarked copy everywhere else. And AI SDR and content vendors built on OpenAI's API now have a setting to answer for, since marking is off unless they turn it on. The Reddit threads on the announcement show how some users read it. A highly upvoted comment on r/OpenAI quotes the 17% figure, and another calls the rule useless. One on r/ChatGPT notes the mark covers EU customers only, unlike Anthropic's. OpenAI's own numbers and its users agree the label is easy to strip, so a sales policy built on "we might get caught" won’t hold.

Measurement is further along than ad verification

Measurement is the half that’s further along, and it's where B2B teams have the most to gain. Our earlier read of ChatGPT Ads argued that a sales-led team's first budget there belongs in measurement, because OpenAI's own attribution can't follow a deal through a long cycle. Monday's roster changes what that budget can buy. OpenAI's companion post says advertisers can choose a click-through window matched to their buying cycle and add a one-day view-through window. The geo experiments with Haus, Measured or WorkMagic offer a read that doesn't depend on the platform's own reporting.

All three results OpenAI published with the announcement come from consumer brands, and each was reported by one of its measurement partners. The new placement sits next to image generation, which is mostly a consumer task.

The B2B evidence so far comes from agencies that sell ChatGPT Ads management, and it points both ways. Interteam Marketing says three anonymized B2B SaaS clients got more than 150 qualified leads in three months at a cost per lead 60% below Google's, without defining a qualified lead or disclosing spend. Windmill Strategy spent $1,470 on a month-long pilot for industrial and manufacturing offers and got 259 clicks and no leads. Neither shows a B2B buyer moving from a ChatGPT ad to a pipeline stage.

The brand-safety pilots need a closer look. DV and IAS will evaluate how OpenAI applies its own standards in a test environment, without seeing real conversations. IAS's CEO describes its review as assessing how OpenAI's safeguards "perform across a broad and evolving range of scenarios." That review tests the rulebook. On the open web, a verification tag fires on the live placement where an ad ran and reports back. Here the verifier grades OpenAI's rules against scenarios. The advertiser learns whether the rules work in principle, but it can’t see whether its own ad ran beside a conversation it would've avoided.

A fair objection is that this is what the start of a verified channel looks like. A gated pilot is a first step, and verifier access tends to widen once a platform has enough ad revenue to protect. OpenAI may also be right to be careful with the detector. As the company wrote in 2024, even a low false-positive rate applied to large volumes of text would produce a large number of false positives. Both points are fair, but for now a GTM team can only cite the verification. Nobody outside the pilots can inspect it yet.

What this means for B2B marketing and sales leaders

Run your own test before you trust anyone's report. If ChatGPT Ads gets budget this quarter, set up a geo holdout or a matched-market test that ends at a pipeline stage you already report on. Treat partner-reported CPA as a hypothesis. Ask your OpenAI rep, in writing, which of the named partners can measure past the 30-day click window and what they'll share from the DV and IAS pilots when those report. If you run HubSpot, its ChatGPT Ads integration, announced September 16, attributes closed deals back to the campaign that sourced them. Turn it on before the test starts.

Hold the image format until a B2B advertiser publishes results. The placement is new and sits beside a consumer use case. The first test group is small, so another advertiser will pay for the first read.

Base the disclosure rule for AI-drafted customer copy on authorship, since detection won’t work. Decide what a rep or marketer has to change or disclose before AI-drafted text reaches an EU buyer. Apply the rule in every office, because the watermark will treat Paris and Chicago differently and a buyer won't.

Ask your AI writing vendors where the watermark is switched on. Any tool generating outbound or content through OpenAI's API now has a default-off setting, and procurement will want the answer on file before a European customer asks.

My bet is that OpenAI publishes findings from the DoubleVerify or IAS pilots before it opens the text detector beyond approved researchers. The order will show whether it's working harder for the advertisers paying for inventory or for the regulators and readers asking what the machine wrote.

ChatGPT is now a channel that gets checked, on terms OpenAI writes. That beats a channel nobody outside OpenAI could check at all.
